Description

Commission for :iconshralen: of her Dragon's Royale character: Akuma.

It's only lineart but yeah, he is supposed to be a pretty thug guy. It was fun to play around with a dragon with no arms, especially when it came to mixing it up with the human form. It's always a challenge.
The baggy clothes also made it a challenge to make him come across as bulky in human form. But I think it's pretty fine like this. At least I hope, the hands helped a lot.

This is a good lineart, very clean, and you pulled out the baggy clothes. Don't worry, I think this is a rather good piece, but I am going to point out where I think you could improve on this.

First, on the drawing all the way to the right, I believe that the head is a little small compared to what it should be. Even if the baggy clothes makes the character larger than what he is, it is too small compared to his height, or then he is a person with an unnaturally tall frame. Otherwise, I think that it is the only thing that is striking me on the anatomy level.

I also believe that it would be better if you would have filled in your characters with some colour to make them stand out against the background, such as grey. I understand that your client may have commissioned you some lineart, but I am only suggesting that you use the bucket tool. For example, in the third figure, it was difficult to distinguish the membrane between the last finger and the back because the lines are very close to the body (as such, it was only on closer inspection that I noticed that there was something there). Same for the dragon form.

The last remark is a bit delicate because I do not know the original design and so I cannot point it out as a "mistake", but they are usually no muscles in "wing arms" as you have drawn it. It's not a huge thing, and I think that very little people will point this out, but it's a good thing to know when drawing dragons. I know that dragons are not real, and so free to interpretation, but when looking at bat wings one can see that there are just tendon and bones in the wing and that the muscles that move them are all in the chest (it's the same for birds too, but on bats it is easier to see).

I hope that none of those sounded inappropriate or against what the commissioner asked from you: it's always a little troublesome to critique some commissioned art because the design, subject and sometimes even the composition is not up to the artist.

To tell the truth, my favourite part of this is the drawing all the way to the right, both because it is interesting to see how the previous two mash together and that the pose is more dynamic than the two others. It is what owned you your four and four and a half stars in my critique. The four stars in technique are caused by the wobbly anatomy, even if it is good for the cartoony style you are going for. Finally, I think that the impact could be improved by filling in the characters to make them stand out from the background: back lines on the greenish background of DeviantArt is rather dull (even if it is already better than an awkward white background).

I hope that I don't sound too harsh, and keep up the good work <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>
